What is a Ductless Heat Pump?

Ductless heat pumps can be used for both heating and cooling a home. They are extremely energy efficient and do not require conventional ductwork, making them a great solution for many homes.

In the summer, a heat pump functions the same way as an air conditioner; it takes heat from inside the house and deposits it outside - leaving the inside cool. In the winter, it is reversed so that instead of depositing the hot air outside, it pushes it inside to heat your home (hence the name). While they are typically not used as the single heat source for a home, they are a great way to offset your energy bill in late fall and early spring when the days are cooler.

  • Ductless cooling systems offer greater flexibility than traditional ducted systems, as they can be installed in homes or buildings without existing ductwork. They are also more energy efficient, offer individual temperature control for each room or zone, are relatively quiet, and easy to install.

  • It is recommended to have your ductless cooling system serviced by a professional technician once a year to ensure that it is running efficiently and to catch any potential issues before they become major problems.

  • Yes, ductless cooling systems are relatively easy to install compared to traditional ducted systems. They do not require any ductwork, which can save time and money on installation. However, it is recommended to have a professional technician install the system to ensure proper installation and avoid any potential issues.

Common Home Applications

There are several ways that ductless heat pumps can be used as a heating and cooling solution in your home. Here are four common applications:

  1. AS A SUPPLEMENT TO CENTRAL AC AND/OR HEATING SYSTEM

for spaces that were added on to a house or are located at the furthest end of the existing ductwork.

  2. FOR ROOMS THAT NEED ADDITIONAL HEATING/COOLING

such as a sun room or for a space that requires independent temperature control like a home office.

  3. AS A COST EFFICIENT ALTERNATIVE FOR AN ADDITIONAL LIVING SPACE

such as a bonus room, studios, cottages & barns, garages, finished attics & basements.

  4. FOR HOMES/SPACES THAT CANNOT ACCOMMODATE CONVENTIONAL DUCTWORK

older homes and antique homes typically do not have space to install ductwork.
