Get Comfortable With Your Thermostat

Get Comfortable With Your Thermostat

Your thermostat might be small but it’s a crucial part of your home’s comfort. We often recommend you reach out when you need a new thermostat as different models aren’t always interchangeable, and we can get you a higher quality version at one of our supply houses.

Programmable Models: You’ll be able to predefine your home’s temperature for specific days and times throughout the week. This function makes it equally as effective as a smart thermostat in enhancing your home’s energy efficiency. For example, if your family is away at work and school from Monday to Friday, a programmable thermostat can be set to automatically adjust the temperature, preventing your heating and cooling system from running unnecessarily when nobody is home.

Smart Models: In comparison, a smart thermostat offers a level of intuitiveness in regulating your home’s heating and cooling. These thermostats will learn from your temperature adjustments and are accessible through a dedicated app. They can also assist in accurately tracking and managing your home’s energy consumption data so you can monitor and assess your HVAC system’s efficiency.

If you’re interested in upgrading your home’s thermostat, schedule an appointment with one of our technicians. We’ll review your current models, make suggestions based on your needs and get you on our installation calendar.

Planning For The Season Ahead

Planning For The Season Ahead

Sure it might be a little cold still, but we’re already thinking about and planning for Spring and Summer. I surveyed a few members of our team about what they’re looking forward to most and here’s what they had to say:

I’m looking forward to finishing my rock garden project I started at the end of last summer ~ Angela, Customer Care

I’m looking forward to getting outdoors for walks and hikes, playing golf with friends, and the BBQ’s ~ Joe, Customer Care

I can’t wait to head to the beach and plan vacations ~ Dina, Office Coordinator

As for me, I’m looking forward to heading into our season on the Gault Stone & Landscape Supplies branch of our business. We just updated our Westport showroom and have some new products coming to market this Spring (more news to come!). And of course, I’m looking forward to some pool time, trips and warmer weather.

Cheers to Spring!

Heading South for Winter?

Heading South for Winter?

If you’re avoiding the New England cold and snow this year, it is important to proactively prepare and protect your home when away for an extended period of time this winter.

Maintain your heat: Make sure your heating system is working properly prior to departing and set your thermostat to 55 degrees or higher.

Monitor your home: Asking family, friends or neighbors to regularly check on your home in your absence can help prevent costly damage. Water from broken pipes can flood an empty or unoccupied home in a matter of hours, causing structural damage to the house and loss of personal property.

And don’t forget to utilize the technology already in your home while away: program your smart thermostat, set up additional alerts, and adjust the cameras on your home security system to capture potential problem areas.

Any problems, make sure we’re on your emergency contact list - our technicians are available 24/7 at 203.227.5181!

Don't Get Caught in Pricing Games...

Don't Get Caught in Pricing Games...

At Gault, we don’t play games.

Recognizing the Signs: When to Replace Your Propane Tank

Recognizing the Signs: When to Replace Your Propane Tank

Propane tanks are a vital component of many households, providing a reliable source of energy for heating, cooking, and more. Over time, however, propane tanks may wear out or become less efficient, ultimately requiring replacement. Here are some of the signs that it may be time for a new propane tank in your home.

1. Age of the Tank:

Propane tanks have a limited lifespan, and ageing tanks are more prone to leaks, corrosion, and other issues that can compromise safety and performance. Consulting with one of our experienced technicians to assess the condition of your tank can help determine if replacement is necessary.

2. Corrosion and Physical Damage:

Inspect your propane tank regularly for signs of corrosion or physical damage. Look for issues like rust spots, or discoloration on the tank's surface, as well as dents, cracks, or other visible damage that may affect the tank's integrity. If you notice significant corrosion or physical damage, call 203.227.5181 to schedule an appointment with one of our technicians.

3. Inaccurate Fuel Level Readings:

Propane tanks often feature fuel level gauges to indicate how much propane is remaining. If you notice inconsistent or inaccurate readings, it may indicate a faulty gauge. A malfunctioning gauge can disrupt your ability to monitor propane usage effectively. In such cases, consulting with one of our propane professionals can help determine if the tank needs replacement or if a repair can resolve the issue.

4. Declining Propane Efficiency:

Aging tanks may struggle to maintain optimal pressure and deliver propane effectively, resulting in higher consumption and increased costs. Upgrading to a new propane tank can restore efficiency, ensuring you receive the full value from your propane supply.

Recognizing the signs that indicate the need for propane tank replacement is crucial for maintaining a safe, efficient, and reliable propane system in your home. To set up a consultation with Gault Energy now call 203.227.5181 or fill out a form here.

Preparing For A Power Outage

Preparing For A Power Outage

Year-round, demand on the electric grid fluctuates based on usage, weather, and supply. The unpredictable nature of electricity usage can lead to outages and widespread or rolling blackouts. According to the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC), almost two-thirds of the country is at an elevated risk for an outage this summer, including Connecticut.

“Every single person I spoke to knowledgeable, professional, and courteous. The work was done according to the time frame I was given at the beginning of the generator process. There was no problems at all. I was extremely impressed by the whole process.”

- Gault Customer Wilton

While we can’t control the weather, the power grid, or manmade disruptions to power lines, we can control how we prepare for an outage. Keeping flashlights and batteries, water and nonperishable food, and a first aid kit and spare medication on hand are key for storm season prep. But if you’re interested in powering parts or all of your home during an outage, then we recommend investing in a whole-home generator that’s designed to automatically turn on when needed.

We offer a turnkey solution starting with an appointment with our Generator Specialist to determine which option meets your needs.

From there, our team will guide you through the process from start to finish with our technicians, installers, and electricians on-site.

Visit gaultenergy.com/generators to learn more about our generator solutions.

Evolving Over 160 Years

A Note From Sam

Over our 160-year history, one of our sustaining principles has been to continually evolve to meet the ever-changing needs of the communities we serve. Some of our most significant evolutions include:

  • Adding service and installation of equipment to our offerings in 1956 to better serve our oil customers

  • Beginning delivery of propane in 2008 to create a one-stop shop for our fuel customers, and

  • Launching into generator installations in 2013 after Hurricane Sandy.

Another evolution…not as significant but certainly interesting was in 1918 and 1919 when our fleet of 60 horses were rented out for funeral hearse services during the Spanish Flu epidemic. At 20 years old, my Grandfather handled up to three funerals a day when roughly 1,000 members of the Westport community contracted the disease.

In case you missed our announcement in May, our newest evolution is into Electrical Services and we have officially hit the ground running! Not only does it make sense for us to provide Electrical Services to help provide a one-stop shop for your home needs but Covid shined a light on the struggle that our customers were having finding qualified help. Over the last three years, while we have been fielding customer calls asking for recommendations for electricians, at the same time, we were bringing Electricians on staff to support our booming generator business. Our team of licensed electricians have immense experience in many facets of the trade and are ready to visit your home!

Clearing The Air

Clearing the Air

The impact from the Canadian wildfires caused a big stir across the area with air quality reaching hazardous levels. And for many of us, that smokey smell started to permeate our homes. Whether it’s from the wildfires or just a run-of-the-mill poor air quality day, here are a few tips to keep you breathing easy:

Keep windows and doors closed and check your seals to fix any leaks.

Change your cooling system’s air filter every 60-90 days.

Close your fireplace flue when it’s not in use.

Explore indoor air quality products to add to your home.

An IAQ Q&A

An Indoor Air Quality Q&A

Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) is getting buzzy again with news reports, commercials and customer calls mentioning air filters, purifiers, and how to keep families healthy at home. We surveyed a few of our Comfort Specialists and technicians to find out what you need to know when thinking about your home’s air quality.

WHAT IS INDOOR AIR QUALITY?

Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) looks at the quality of the air within and around your home related to pollutants and their corresponding health concerns like viruses, headaches, asthma, allergies, heart disease and cancer. Some common indoor pollutants might be from pesticides, radon, excess moisture and building materials.

WHY SHOULD I INVEST IN A WHOLE HOME APPROACH TO IAQ VERSUS A STANDALONE AIR PURIFIER?

If your home has existing ductwork, implementing an IAQ system will be more effective over time than managing a series of standalone units. Our approach to IAQ is always designed for easy maintenance while remaining cost effective. Many standalone air purifiers reflect the trends in IAQ as opposed to the full scope of a home’s air quality needs.

WHAT EXACTLY DOES IONIZATION DO?

Many IAQ products use ionization as a method of cleaning the air – it’s the way it happens in nature - the higher the level of ions, the more pristine the air quality. Through ionization, microscopic air particles are neutralized and fall to the floor to be vacuumed up the next time you clean. This process helps reduce mold, bacteria, germs and viruses around your home.

HOW CAN I FEEL CONFIDENT IN MY HOME’S AIR QUALITY?'

Just because you can’t see it doesn’t mean you should ignore the air inside your home. Air sensors are commonplace as a standalone technology or incorporated in smart home products. These sensors can monitor humidity, dust, allergens and other factors that impact the quality of the air you breathe.

HOW CAN GAULT HELP MANAGE MY INDOOR AIR QUALITY?

HEPA air filters are key. We use the newest and thickest filters to fit your system. They are better quality with a higher MERV rating designed to help remove more particles from the air. MERV ratings classify air filters by the amount and size of particles that the filter blocks; the higher the rating, the tighter the weave to trap more particles. If regularly replaced, HEPA filters can remove up to 99.97% of dust, pollen, mold, bacteria and other airborne particles inside your home

Improve Indoor Air Quality

What's in the Air you Breathe?

We spend up to 90% of our time indoors, and in the winter months, that percentage probably increases for many of us. With indoor air up to 8 times more polluted than outdoor air, it’s important to know what you’re breathing in your home and how it could potentially affect you and your family. Indoor air quality (IAQ) is one of the EPA’s top five environmental health risks because it is a big contributor to lung disease, respiratory tract infections, asthma and lung cancer. With lung disease as the 3rd cause of death in the US, poor IAQ is a huge threat!

Many large corporations, specifically sports teams have recognized this and have been focusing on improving IAQ in their office buildings and locker rooms to reduce sickness and improve productivity. At our own office, we have had a system installed in our HVAC system for years and we’re excited to announce that it is now available for home installation. The system is called AtmosAir and it uses ionization to restore air to its natural state; no pollution or contaminants. Air ions are nature’s method of cleaning the air, the higher the level of ions, the more pristine the air quality. AtmosAir is designed to increase air ions in an indoor space to similar levels to that of a mountaintop.

BENEFITS OF IONIZATION:

  • Reduces Particles: particles are neutralized and literally fall to the floor to be vacuumed up the next time you clean.

  • Controls Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs): gets rid of all odors including cooking odors.

  • Reduces Mold, Bacteria, Viruses, Germs: the reproductive cycle is interrupted and colony forming units decrease.

  • Neutralizes Static: neutralizes all charges in the air and eliminates static electricity.

Before you and your family spend the next five months indoors, give us a call. Installing one of these systems could dramatically improve the air inside your home and lead to better living.

Let's Clear the Air

Let's Clear the Air

Importance-of-a-Clean-Air-Filter.jpg

When most of us hear the words ‘pollution’ and ‘air quality’ we think of the air outside. But what about the quality of the air indoors?

Indoor air quality (IAQ) has a huge effect on our day-to-day life and overall health and wellbeing. Caused by pollutants in and outside the home, poor IAQ can cause both short term health issues like irritation of eyes, nose and throat, fatigue and headaches as well as long term issues like respiratory diseases and cancer. When combined with inadequate ventilation, lack of outdoor air, high temperatures and humidity, IAQ can become even worse.

COMMON POLLUTANT SOURCES:

  • Carpets

  • Building & Paint Products

  • Pesticides & Radon

  • Cleaning Supplies & Chemicals

  • Dust Mites & Dust

  • Mold & Dampness

  • Pet Dander

  • Wood Burning

The installation of a ventilation, purification or air quality system can help to improve your IAQ and overall home comfort. Learn more here!

Tips to Help Save you Energy This Summer

Tips to Help Save You Energy This Summer

As the temperatures rise and the summer heat sets in, finding ways to save energy becomes crucial. Not only does it help reduce our carbon footprint, but it also contributes to lower energy bills! Here are some tips that will make a significant difference in your energy consumption while keeping you cool this summer.

Use a programmable thermostat:

Set your thermostat to automatically adjust the temperature when you're not at home, which can help reduce energy consumption and save money on your energy bills. Not sure how to switch? Give us a call at 203.227.5181 to schedule an appointment with one of our electricians.

Keep your home well-insulated:

Make sure your home is well-insulated to prevent cool air from escaping and warm air from entering. This can help reduce the workload on your air conditioning system and save energy.

Use fans:

Use ceiling fans or portable fans to circulate air throughout your home. This can help reduce the temperature and make you feel cooler without having to rely solely on your air conditioning system.

Close blinds and curtains:

Close blinds and curtains during the hottest part of the day to block out the sun and keep your home cooler.

Use energy-efficient lighting:

Replace incandescent light bulbs with energy-efficient LED bulbs, which use less energy and produce less heat.

Use appliances wisely:

Use appliances such as the dishwasher, washing machine, and dryer during off-peak hours when energy rates are lower. This can help reduce your energy bills and save energy.

Grilling outdoors:

Cook outdoors on the grill instead of using the oven or stove. This can help keep your home cooler and reduce the workload on your air conditioning system.

Avoid using heat-generating appliances:

Using the oven or dryer during the hottest part of the day can make your home feel warmer and cause your air conditioning system to work harder.

Our top priority this summer is to keep you and your family cool and comfortable.

Congrats to all the 2023 grads!

CONGRATS TO ALL THE 2023 GRADS!

Across the country May and June is graduation season - from the little ones graduating Kindergarten to the young adults leaving high school and college for new adventures.

At Gault, graduation season is year-round as we celebrate the successes of our team. Our Gault University (GU) program organizes training and development opportunities, with a special focus on our technicians. We facilitate on the job training for apprentices with master technicians, in-house training from subject matter experts, licensure test prep, external vendor training and continuing education.

My favorite part of Gault University is to see our technicians, drivers and office staff succeed. We take it so seriously that one of our GU leaders is actually a former teacher! I’ve included a few pictures below of some of our recent success stories.

2023 grads - we can’t wait to see what you do next!
